Freaky Friday - Episode 10 - Pranks

Theme : Pranksters

Did you know there is an "art" to pranking?  I said, pranking, not spanking... aka Prankonomy.

"There's a sucker born every minute."

"Take or be taken."

"Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see."

These aphorisms are so ingrained in our life, they're practically commandments. And for good reason: We are a credulous people.  A hoax, we are taught, is an invasive, aggressive stratagem - a nefarious short-circuiting of our natural social instincts, a hack of Trust itself, a deterministic, zero-sum shell game with a clear winner (the prankster) and loser (the gull).

Ways to Annoy People in the Office:

  • Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them if they want fries with that.
  • Email your boss the message: I know what you did last vacation.
  • Page yourself over the intercom. (Don't disguise your voice.)

And who could forget JackAss?

Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man and his crowd of weirdos...

This is my favourite clip from Jackass movie.

Freaky Friday - Episode Nine

As long as I can remember I've been reading the Guiness Book of World Records.

My dad was a collector of The Guiness Book of World Records annual editions and my mum was never stumped as to what to buy him for Christmas every year. When I was really little I loved carefully paging through the large hard cover book looking at the pictures and the freaks of course.  Later on, when I could read, I studied all about the photos I practically memoried and it opened up a whole new Freaky World.

So, now as an adult (kinda), I have carried on the tradition and still buy The Guiness Book of World Records for myself.

Therefore I am a atop with useless information...and my own wee freak at dinner parties.  I have yet to purchased my blue shiney 2010 edition.  They cost a small fortune in SA these days.

Lee Redmond (USA), who has not cut her nails since 1979, has grown and carefully manicured them to reach a total length of 8.65 m (28 ft 4.5 in) as measured on the set of Lo show dei record in Madrid, Spain, on 23 February 2008.  Her longest nail is the right thumb: 90 cm (2 ft 11 in).

Now you may say, whats to freaky about that, right?  Can you imagine doing the simplest of tasks with those claws?  Wipin' yer arse after a no. 2?  or trying to tie or your buttons or lace your shoes?  hmmmm rather limiting when it comes to DIY if you KWIM?

You try and eat a 12" pizza in under two minutes!

The fastest time to eat a 12" pizza is 1 min 45.37 sec and was set by Josh Anderson (New Zealand) in an event organised by Scopa Ltd in Wellington, New Zealand, on 22 March 2008.

Here is the worlds oldest stripper!  Why would anyone wanna see this bloke nekkid is beyond me but thats the beauty of The Guiness Book of World Records.  There are all sorts of freaks in this world...

Bernie Barker born July 31, 1940 in the US of A of course is a regular performer at Club LeBare, Miami Beach, Florida, USA and  began his career in 2000 at the age of 60 as a way to get in shape after recovering from prostate cancer.  He worked as a stripper until he passed away in March 2007. During his stripping career he won over 30 contests.

Geezo, I am still kicking myself to this day that I missed his show.

This cute pooch holds the world record for the most tennis balls held in his mouth by a dog at one time.  Augie, a golden retriever owned by the Miller family in Dallas, Texas, USA, successfully gathered and held all five regulation-sized tennis balls in his mouth on July 6, 2003.

Altogether now.....awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Most prolific mother ever.  You thought Kate Gosselin was a SuperMom?

The greatest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the wife of Feodor Vassilyev (b. 1707–c.1782), a peasant from Shuya, Russia. In 27 confinements she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.

Guitar Hero World Record Freak (I love playing this song on Legends of Rock)

The record for the most sheep shorn manually with scissors or handblade in 8 hours is 50 by János Marton of Hungary.

Marton completed his challenge, without any breaks, on April 26, 2003 at Hódmezovásárhely Animal Husbandry Show, Hódmezovásárhely, Hungary.

I'll bet this guy could be hired to carve your pumpkin at Halloween.

Give him a call at 0800-i-don't-just-sheer-sheep.

That's all folks.

Over and out.

Freaky Friday - Episode Eight

Theme: I am the freak.

Yip, I’m the featured freak this week. The emotional freak! The blubbering freak!  Its how I feel.

I’ve had a terrible week. A week I won’t soon forget. With all the changes in our lives at the moment, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and completely out of my depth.

Kaylin (my youngest) started a new class, new teacher, and new friends and every morning she howls like a banshee and clings to my shirt or pants like I’m going to desert her forever. She is such a drama queen, o woe is me is her motto and she knows exactly how to push my buttons to upset me. The teacher says the minute I’m out the front door of the school getting in to my car, she stops crying and quite happily goes about playing with her mates and the daily routine.

Megan (my eldest) started primary school and so it’s very emotional for both of us. Megan is anxious and shy to make new friends and I’m anxious that she’ll fit in and be bold enough to stand up for herself and fight off the bullies. It’s a mum’s prerogative to worry about these things and it’s a lioness’s job to protect her cubs. It’s the way the world works.

She loves her new class, her new teacher and is very slowly making bonds with a couple of her classmates. After school she goes to after care (because I’m a working mum). School finishes at 1pm and then she goes to after –care until 4pm when I collect her.

Yesterday, on her second day, when I collected her from after-care I could see that she was upset. She didn’t open up to me until we were in the car. She told me that all the girls were punished all afternoon because some of the older girls had gone into the bathrooms and toilet papered the ceiling. No one owned up, so all the girls were punished. She didn’t think this was at all fair.

She said the girls had to sit on the lunch benches (no play) and didn’t get afternoon cookies and tea. Megan also mentioned that the teacher that punished them said if no one owns up to the mess today that the same punishment would apply the following day.

My heart went out to her immediately and then I lost it! I was livid!

What fekking army was that teacher trying to whip into shape? She’s dealing with kids for feks sake!

It’s Megan’s second day at primary school, her second day at after-care. Everything and everyone is strange to her. She’s feeling intimidated by the older children and not confident enough yet to be her usual out-spoken self. She’s out of her comfort zone and THAT’S how you treat my child? You instil fear in her - so that she feels scared to even ask the teachers to remind her where the toilets are.

What kind of monster punishes a child by withholding food and drink? That’s just mean. I don’t pay a small for basic needs to be taken away from her.

My first reaction was to pounce and I pounced. I got on the phone to the after-care co-owner and let her have it. I was angry, emotional and completely heart-broken. Yes, I over-reacted and told her that she’s running a concentration camp. I told her that next she’d have them sitting on their hands like true POW style. I told her that I felt like taking Megan out of her after-care and finding a suitable school that will have the smaller children in mind. I told her to imagine herself as Megan – I told her to imagine how scared she was.

I told her that I wanted her transition into big school a smooth as possible and as positive as possible. I didn’t want any negative memories for her to hold on to for the rest of her life. She’s at the age now where she will remember things way into her old age. She is impressionable, she is trusting, and she’s only 6!

The principal’s response was that I need to understand they need to “lay down the law” in the first few weeks because some of them can get out of hand. I said “Lay down the law? Are you cultivating an army or are you running an after-care?”. Yes, I know what you’re thinking.....over-protective emotional mother.

I really believe that the punishment was rather harsh for the new Grade One children. Why eliminate who it wasn’t first of all – and punish the rest for a while. But you don’t take away their snacks and juice. Geezo why don’t you tie them to the chair leg while you’re at it?? I told her that she should remember the impact she has on the children.

On top of this fiasco, our ball of fluff is causing chaos in our home, the girls won’t stop picking her up and swinging her around like a helicopter. It’s just sad. I think I may have made a mistake and that they are not ready for the responsibility of a baby pet. Perhaps my timing was off with this decision.

Not only am had I stressed, tired, grumpy, emotional at home. Yesterday at work, were we asked in our Sales Meeting to share 3 personal goals and 3 business goals with the team? The majority of them said they want to maintain a healthier lifestyle, make more money, spend more time with friends and family etc. The usual...when it came to me I said “Everyone else has said they want more this and more that. I don’t want more of anything!” I said that I wanted to count my blessing everyday and be grateful for the awesome things I already do have. I don’t want anything more. I have everything I want. I have everything I need.

I found verbalising how I was feeling inside was incredibly emotional and powerful for me and I promptly burst into tears in front of everyone. Not just a single tear trickling down my cheek – the ugly cry. Yes, folks the uncontrollably sobbing. Now, as I work with a bunch of women, we all started howling. Each one of us is either pre-menstrual, pre-menopausal or full blown menopausal - It was a regular weeping fest.

So there you have it - I’m an emotional freak. My rollercoaster of emotions this week has left me mentally and physically exhausted.

Just as well I didn’t have internet access or I probably would’ve googled some medical term for my irrational behaviour and found out that I have some rare mental illness.

“Oh woe is me!”

I need a hug.

Freaky Friday - Episode Seven

Today's theme : McFreaky McDonalds Shite

Morgan Spurlock did this in Super Size Me, for about a year. But Karen Hanrahan has kept a McDonald’s hamburger since 1996.

Yup, she’s had this burger for 12 years!

And it still looks ready to eat. That’s frightening!

McDonald’s (and other factory fast food joints) use a lot of preservatives to keep their food fresh-looking (note: ‘fresh-looking,’ not ‘fresh’) during it’s production, transportation, and storage. This keeps their food looking good a lot longer than is natural. (See the end of this post for the current ingredients in a McDonald’s Hamburger bun.)

Under regular circumstances, if you grilled a burger and put it on a bun and put it in a container for a month, you’d have to scrape the mold off just to see it.

As Karen says, “Ladies, Gentleman, and children alike – this is a chemical food. There is absolutely no nutrition here.”

Karen is a wellness consultant and uses the 12 year old burger as a prop in her talks. See all the photos and read Karen’s description on her blog, “Best of Mother Earth ~ Creating Healthier Lives”.

NOTE: Regarding the hamburger wrapper in the photo that is clearly a more current wrapper with the “I’m lovin’ it” slogan, Karen explains this in her post: “The paper and bag in the backround is circa 2008 – to add decor to the photo. My friend Robyn’s idea.”

McDonald’s Hamburger Bun ingredients (as of 2008):

Enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, high fructose corn syrup, yeast, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, soybean oil, canola oil, contains 2% or less of each of the following: salt, wheat gluten, calcium sulfate, soy flour, ammonium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, ammonium chloride, baking soda, sorbic acid, deactivated dry yeast, dough conditioners (may contain one or more the following: distilled monoglycerides, DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate, calcium peroxide, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, mono- and diglycerides, enzymes, guar gum), calcium propionate & sodium propionate (preservatives), soy lecithin.

Note: Calcium and Sodium Propionate are ‘mold inhibitors,’ hence the fresh looking 12 year old bun

Did you Know?

Most folks assume that a chicken nugget is just a piece of fried chicken, right? Wrong! Did you know, for example, that a McDonald's Chicken McNugget is 56% corn?

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan is a fascinating book that details the changing eating habits of Americans. I can't recommend it highly enough. It explains how, over the last 30 years, we have become a nation that eats vast quantities of corn much more so than Mexicans, the original "corn people."

But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to "help preserve freshness." According to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause "nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse." Ingesting five grams of TBHQ can kill."

Bet you never thought that was in your chicken McNuggets!

Save on production costs and go to You Tube.   The beauty of social networking...apparently these plonkers are now millionaires because they made a rap about Chicken McNuggets and posted it on the internet.  McDonalds capitalised on their bad skin and poor musicability, slapped their logo on it and voila!  Instant success!

Freaky or wot?

Freaky Friday - Episode 5 - Man with Two Penises

Freaky Friday
Theme : Circus Oddities

Jean (or Juan) Baptista dos Santos is said to have been a “Gipsey”, born in Faro, Portugal around 1843, to normal parents with two other normal children. His career as an exhibitionist seems to have been confined strictly to medical circles; in 1865 turned down a sum of 200,000 francs to appear for two years with a French circus. He possessed two functioning penises and three scrota, the outer two of which each contained a single testis. Dos Santos claimed that the central scrotum had also contained a pair of fully-formed testes, but that these had retreated into his abdomen when he was ten years old.

Freaky Friday - Episode 3 - Sexy Contortionist

You wouldn’t want to stumble onto one of these little critters in the middle of the night. This strange alien-like creature is called an Aye-aye and its native to Madagascar.

This little bastard combines small rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. It’s also the world largest nocturnal primate, characterized by its unique method of finding food. It taps on trees to hear if there is food, then gnaws holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out.

Freaky Friday - Episode Two - TwoHeaded Kitten

Cutest Little Furry Bastard Evar!

Cutest Little Furry Bastard Eva!
Two headed kitten "Gemini", the two-headed kitten lived only a few days. Owner Lee Bluetear said she didn't know what caused the death of the unusual creature but she said the kitten appeared very tired and did not want to eat. The story and photo of Gemini was distributed worldwide. "I couldn't believe how much interest there really was," Bluetear said.

Veterinarians initially gave Gemini a meager chance of one long life, let alone nine. Gemini was born with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes. Bluetear, 40, said things looked good at first. Gemini initially appeared strong and was drinking milk. "Everybody is totally amazed that this thing exists," Bluetear said at the time.

Kitties aren't the only animal born with two heads

An Afghan woman gave birth in Iran to twin boys whose heads share the same body, doctors said today (09/10/04).

The babies stood little chance of survival, they added. "I've seen twin attached by the head or stomach but never a baby with two heads," a female doctor at the Ghaem hospital in the north-western city of Mashhad told AFP by telephone.

"Sometimes one head cries, while the other sleeps," she added.

Steroid overdose?
You may have inflated biceps, Mr Hard Ass Body Builder,

Freaky Friday - Episode 1 - Quasimodo

For as long as I can remember I've had this morbid facination with anything freaky.

From humans with extra limbs, to people with fettishes, to phobias, stalkers and of course the disgusting YouTube viral video: 2 girls one cup and anything to do with the super-natural.

Ironic, because I can't even watch a decent horror film without getting fucking nightmares and yet I just love freaks.  I have to look - even though I can't bear to look, I can't bear to look away even more!

Its like a magnet that pulls me to these kinds of oddities.  I know, I know, I'm sick.  There is a name of us freaks - Freakaphobe!

So we'll start off our my First Episode of Freaky Friday with the Top 10 Human Freaks of Nature.

Enjoy.

One of the Most Freaky Humans Eva - If not the fucking freakiest -Quasi Modo.

Was he real? or just a character made up by writer, Victor Hugo?

Quasimodo was supposedly born with physical deformities, which Hugo describes as a huge wart that covers his left eye and a severely hunched back. He is found abandoned in Notre Dame (on the foundlings' bed, where orphans and unwanted children are left to public charity) on Quasimodo Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, by the archdeacon Claude Frollo, who adopts the baby, names him after the day the baby was found, and brings him up to be the bell-ringer of the cathedral. Due to the loud ringing of the bells, Quasimodo also becomes deaf. Although he is hated for his deformity, it is revealed that he is fairly kind at heart.

Fucking Fugly Freak!  I love it!
